Hotel Emporium was founded in 2003 as a direct manufacturer of luxury items for hotels. Since then, it has developed a rich history with a strong commitment to sustainability in hospitality, creating sustainable collections like Ecolosophy.

Dinesh Weerasekera, Senior Vice President of Sales at Hotel Emporium, spoke to us about this and other topics

In Mexico, which luxury hotels are you allied with?

Currently, we are partnered with Palace Resorts, one of Mexico's most luxurious hotel chains, where we distribute our innovative products. This includes the Eco Pod, an eco-friendly hotel amenities collection that won silver at the 2023 WILD Design Awards and the 2023 New York Design Awards, as well as first place at the 2021 Dieline Awards, among others.

In which countries do you see an increase in the preference for sustainable products?

Most of our hotel clients are actively seeking sustainable product options. This trend is particularly strong in China, where customers still prefer single-use products.

What have been your main achievements in sustainability?

The hotel sector has a significant commitment for 2050, aiming to reduce emissions by 90% per room. We have taken significant steps to reduce this impact and promote sustainability by adopting renewable energy in hotels and reducing plastic and liquid waste through bulk programs and sustainable packaging options.

Additionally, we use clean formulations and more eco-friendly packaging for our products. We also collaborate with various NGOs, such as One Tree Planted, Clean the World, and the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society.

How should hotels respond to the current environmental crisis?

The environmental impact of hotels significantly contributes to the current sustainability crisis. Hotels should adopt greener practices, such as introducing initiatives that use sustainable materials, promoting water conservation, and educating guests.

What eco-friendly trends do you observe among travelers? How should hotels adapt to these demands?

Today's eco-conscious travelers are much more aware of their environmental impact. They want to stay in hotels that prioritize sustainability, from using eco-friendly products to supporting local communities. We have also noticed a growing desire for personalized experiences. Travelers want more than just a place to sleep.

By 2025, what will be the main environmental priorities for the hotel sector?

We see that sustainability will remain a primary focus. Eco-certifications will become a key differentiator. Technology will play an even more significant role, with AI driving automated experiences.

Health and wellness will also be at the forefront, with more services and facilities. Additionally, there will be a greater emphasis on hotels partnering with local businesses to offer authentic and immersive experiences.
